Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and diligence. – Abigail Adams
After a year spent working in publishing, I decided to pursue an education-related career path. For the past year, I have worked as an English, mathematics, and computer skills tutor at the Center for Academic Excellence at Ivy Tech Community College in Elkhart County. It was there that I had the opportunity to work one-on-one with students of all ages and backgrounds as they pursued higher education. As a tutor, I aided students primarily with their coursework, including homework assignments, projects, and studying for exams and quizzes. I also provided academic guidance and emotional support as students tried to find ways to complete their schoolwork amid their busy work schedules and numerous family obligations. During this time, I was able to hone my skills as a math tutor, something at which this word-loving English major never thought she’d excel.
My passion for education and my dedication to students led me to the Upward Bound program. Through this program, I will be able to instill in students a great respect for education and to help them become lifelong learners who pursue education, not only in high school, college, and beyond, but in their everyday lives.
Areas of Responsibility
As coordinator of the Upward Bound program, I assist the Associate Director of Upward Bound and the Director of TRiO Programs. This includes leading iConnect sessions with students, providing tutoring to students, graphic design, website maintenance, file and data management, and much more.
I enjoy cooking and baking, reading (it’s a good thing the library is free), writing (mostly short stories, research essays, and poetry), yoga, and making homemade greeting cards.
