Rebuilding Together in St. Joseph County is an affiliate of the national organization designed to assist our neighbors in need. Its mission is to preserve and revitalize houses and communities, assuring that low-income homeowners, as well as families with children, are afforded the necessities of warmth and safety – things we often take for granted.
This year, hundreds of local volunteers helped to rebuild 19 homes this spring and Upward Bound scholars were eager to help. “I initially hated that fact that I had to get up so early, but after speaking with the homeowner, this experience really made me appreciate what I have and my community, " said Isaac Simparinka. Nationally, with the help of 105,340 volunteers working a total 780,126 hours, performed repairs on 8,526 homes, 284 nonprofit facilities and 80 community spaces via the Rebuild Together network. “I can see why so many people volunteer, this is personally rewarding,” said Tiana Mudzimurema.
After five hours of painting, cleaning, and planting under the South Bend sun, UB scholars still managed to inquire: ‘Can we do this again next year?’
