Surrounded by family, friends, and institutional supporters, on the first Wednesday of every February, high school football recruits officially announce their commitments and sign National Letters of Intent highlighting the next step of their academic and athletic careers. Considering ND TRiO is also packed with talent, mirroring the NCAA’s National Signing Day for athletes, ND TRiO Programs hosted the 2nd Annual ND TRiO College Signing Day also known as Decision Day. With the assistance of Ron Powlus, Notre Dame alumnus and Director of Player Development, TRiO scholars were celebrated for the successful completion of TRiO programming, high school, and for making a commitment to higher education. “This is a first for my family on so many levels. In a few weeks, I will go to prom, graduate, and be the first in my family to go to college. I can’t believe this is real,” said Talent Search senior, Taylor Alexander. Headed to Indiana State University in the fall, Jermaine Lighthall, Upward Bound senior also expressed his sentiments regarding the event. “I like how this was done. The setup, the support…this makes the next step feel like a really big deal.” Taking place at the Guglielmino Athletics Complex (affectionately known as the “Gug”) at the University of Notre Dame surrounded by high school and college representatives, family, alumni of state-wide institutions, ND staff, future generations, and of course, their TRiO family, students were provided a certificate of achievement and a college t-shirt of their future alma mater.
