ND Upward Bounds hosts the 2016 UB Summer Olympiad

Every summer, Upward Bound Summer Academy Scholars attend the statewide Upward Bound Olympiad, a two-day event filled with recreational and academic activities. This year, hosted by Our Lady, after barely missing the first-place trophy, ND Scholars were prepared to bring home the gold.

Maintaining tradition, students participated in various athletic activities such as soccer, dancing, basketball and the most intense/competitive this year, volleyball. After building up a sweat, students prepared for an engaging and insightful presentation by Ron & Rodney Lewis of the Lewis Influence. “They always keep it real. Honest. We need that. I think this is the motivation our schools need as we prepare for tomorrow’s academic competitions,” said rising senior Camyrn Watt. Scholars concluded the day by painting beautiful images capturing this year’s theme, “Where will YOUR road lead you?”

The following day, scholars of ND, IUPUI, IPFW, Vincennes, and Indiana Wesleyan prepared for the academic bowl and the newly added competition, debate. While teams battled head-to-head, the remaining scholars participated in team-building and critical thinking activities.  After an hour of jeopardy-like trivia and intense debate questions focusing on areas such as international policy and education, the scores were in.

This year’s winners are:

Academic Bowl

Gold: IN Wesleyan

Silver: Vincennes

Bronze: IPFW

Debate

Gold: Notre Dame

Silver: Vincennes

Bronze: IPFW

Similar to any other Olympic-like event, even though the trophies were awarded based on various skills, it was clear that each student returned to their respective institutions as winners.
