TRiO Spotlight: Lamyaa Hussein

Lamyaa Hussein is a recent academic honors graduate (Class of 2017) of John Adams High School of South Bend, Indiana. In addition to serving as a student leader of Upward Bound, Lamyaa is the event planner for the International Student Organization, a member of JAHS Student Government as well as the National Honor Society. In addition to her academic activities, Lamyaa is a member of the Indiana CPA Society of Scholars, a camp counselor for the Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture, a member of the South Bend’s Youth Task Force, and a youth leader/volunteer for the Islamic Society of Michiana where she assists kindergartners and preschoolers in learning the English dialect, the religion of Islam, and American culture to promote understanding and cohesion of both cultures. Recently, Lamyaa was selected to serve as a Balfour Scholar at Indiana University – Bloomington.

Due to Lamyaa’s extracurricular involvement, she is a scholarship recipient of Indiana’s 21st Century Scholars, the John & Sonja Laidig Community Service Scholarship, the Purdue Promise, Community Foundation of St. Joseph County, and represents the state of Indiana as the only Dell Scholars scholarship recipient. Lamyaa is currently serving as an intern for the Unity Gardens for the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County.

In the fall, Lamyaa will attend Purdue University – West Lafayette to major in Speech and Hearing Science.
