Embodying #TeamSouthBend, Indonesia (Indy) Brown is a 2018 senior of John Adams High School. Graduating with academic honors (and IB certification), Indy was clearly determined to excel academically. However, the same intensity Indy displayed in the classroom can also be found throughout the South Bend community. Living by the mantra of “The work is its own validation,” Indy actively participated on the John Adams Mock Trial (receiving the Best Witness Award at regional and state competitions from 9-12th grades); served as the vice president (two years) and secretary (two years) for the John Adams Student Government; a member of the National Honor Society; the team manager for the John Adams Football and Basketball Teams; editor for the John Adams Yearbook; participant of the John Adams Volunteer Association, and the Marching, Concert, Jazz, and Pep Bands as section leader (trumpet).
In addition to her scholastic involvement, Indy also serves as a student leader within the community via her participation on the South Bend Youth Task Force; the Rotary Club; the Student Advisory Council (AARC), the co-founder for the Drug & Alcohol Prevention Committee; Take Ten, an anti-violence/anti-bullying program; and Innovative Thinkers where she serves as a mentee and facilitator for 7th graders.
For her community-focused leadership and academic feats, Indy has received the Youth Community Service Award from the Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation of St. Joseph County; a Resolution of the Common Council of the City of South Bend; the Boy Scouts of America Mayor’s Award; and the 2018 honoree of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s South Bend Alumnae Chapter. Indy has also represented South Bend as a Student Youth Ambassador in Louisville, Kentucky at the National Seminar sponsored by Engaging Youth, Engaging Neighborhoods. She further demonstrated her leadership by participating in South Bend’s Youth Neighborhood Leadership Council where she aided in the implementation of the Kelly Park Project to aid in the beautification of her community.
Due to her endless academic and community involvement, Indy is a 2018 recipient of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship (the third Lilly winner in the last three years for ND TRiO). As a Balfour Scholar, Indy will take her talents to the University of Notre Dame to major in political science. Indy aspires to become an attorney.
Way to go, Indy!
